How to install OpenVPN Client on Windows Vista

Before you install OpenVPN client on Windows Vista, you have to disable Vista’s UAC (User Account Control) as follows:

1. Open up Control Panel, and type in “UAC” into the search box. You’ll see a link for “Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off”:

2. On the next screen you should uncheck the box for “Use User Account Control (UAC)”, and then click on the OK button.

Below are some screenshots which will help you go through the installation of the openvpn client on your Windows Vista machine.


  1. To begin, Double click on the EXE file and then follow the steps below:

Choose Run and proceed.Click on “Next”

Agree to the terms of the Open Source license.

Keep the default components selected and click “Next”.

Keep the default install location so that future updates or configuration changes which we supply will install to the correct directory. Click on “Install”.

The installation of the TAP driver will usually cause Windows to ask if you want to install it. Select “Install this driver software anyway”. The TAP driver is part of the OpenVPN package and is required for the VPN to operate.

Click “Next”.

Installation is complete, click on “Finish” to wrap up.
